Ethical Leadership

My vision for the future is working in an environment where ethical leadership is practiced frequently and is implemented correctly into the work environment. Traditionally ethics has been thought of to mean fair and equitable treatment towards customers, business partners, and even competitors. More recently that term has evolved to include corporations being concerned with corporate social responsibility and their impact on the global environment. As an engineer, the impact that my work will leave on the environment and on my other coworkers will be very important as I move forward. We need to make unethical behavior more costly than ethical behavior. This is the only way to coerce management positions to lead more ethically in their own workplaces. It pays to be unethical, so using ethical leadership in mu daily life and in future endeavors will show workers that I truly care for their well-being. At the bare minimum, the Engineering Code of Ethics must be followed. Here is a link to this code of ethics.

Team Talk

I use ethical leadership at St. Petersburg Collegiate High School in special instances such as in unruly group projects or when a need for ethical leadership is shown. The ethical leader that I admire the most is my father. He demonstrated all of the characteristics of ethical leadership while running his own company. One of the most important traits of ethical leadership is the respect that is given to an employee. An ethical leader shows respect all members of the team by listening to them attentively, valuing their contributions, being compassionate, and being generous while considering opposing viewpoints. My father did this very well, always hosting team meetings and showing compassion to his own workers. Showing honesty, respect, integrity, and a love for justice, my father has inspired me and is the ethical leader that I admire the most. The ethical considerations in my line of work is very high. As an engineer, you have to understand that cutting costs on a project may result in the loss of life. Also, engineers must keep the safety of the public as top priority, engineers should not involve themselves with malpractice and If an engineers judgment is overruled under circumstances that endanger life or property, they should notify their employer or client and such other authority as may be appropriate. This is only one example of a statement in the Engineering Code of Ethics, as there are many more that you can go through. I plan on following the Engineering Code of Ethics and to lead my team using ethical leadership tactics in the future.
