Service Leadership
Service leadership is the act of stepping up and taking a leadership role while serving your community at the same time. You need to summon the courage to engage in a leadership role, taking up a massive part of your time, to devote yourself to your community and to answer the call to lead. Service leadership is very important as having a productive servant leader in a team makes the team more productive and effective at their jobs. This in turn helps support the community around others and yourself. The service leader makes sure everyone is looked after and taken care of in their team, and without the position of service leadership, the team would fall apart. Having a service mindset approach to leadership creates a more selfless mindset in a leader. It affects the way that an individual approaches leadership into a more communal definition. By taking care of your workers and insuring that they work productively, the team works better, and this style of service leadership affects an individual's approach to leadership.
The service project that I poured most of my time into besides the multiple National Honor Society Volunteer Opportunities I participated in was working for the Science Center in St. Petersburg, Florida as a lead volunteer. In the summer and fall of 2018, I volunteered more than 110 hours of my time working with kids and animals as a lead volunteer. I worked with the rest of my team to take care of the animals whenever necessary and to help assist the teachers at the Science Center. What I learned from my experience was that in some cases a Laissez-faire leadership style was the best option, and in others a more authoritarian style of leadership was necessary. This leadership position taken in order to service my community was a great learning experience.
In conclusion, service leadership is a very important concept that is implemented into society today. From firsthand experience with my volunteering work and National Honor Society work working in a service leadership position and with service leaders changes the way you view leadership and shows the true importance of the role of service leader.
